Professional societies / chapters and organising engineering events

NITKRacing is a student collegiate racing team which builds and markets an open-wheeled  formula styled racing car.  The team participated in FS Hungary 2012 and finished in top 10 in two events and finished a commendable 33rd place overall. The team spent considerable in IISc to optimize the cooling system and validated the car in IISc’s wind-tunnel facility. The current car NR-XIII has been completely designed and built. The team has made it through the virtual round of SF India contest. The team is sponsored by leading automotive giants like Daimler, Bosch and Quest.

BAJA consists of a set of dedicated students who are building an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) to participate in BAJA challenge to be held in Pithambur. NITK BAJA is the only team to have constructed 6 ATVs in 5 years. The awards won are as follows

2012- Marketing presentation award

2011- Design award and Marketing award

SAE INDIA is the technical club responsible for creating awareness about automotive technology in the campus. The club is building a efficycle, an electromechanical efficient tricycle and have made it through the virtual event. The club also hosts velocity 2.0, a radio-controlled car contest. It organizes events to promote automotive knowledge by having ‘Under the hood’ an event wherein a car is dismantled and its parts are explained to students. They also circulate a newsletter called "Pitstop".

Flying and hobby club

Being one of its kind, the club has risen in the last few years to be organizing many events that have developed interests among the students to take up aeronautical related activities during their free time and gain knowledge out of it. The hands on workshops organized to build interest among the students have stood out to be the most successful event judging by the turn out of the enthusiasts. Comprising students from various branches who are keen enthusiasts in the aero-modelling & aeronautical fields, the club aspires to reach greater heights in the years to come!

Robotics Club

The Robotics club in NITK was established with the aim to impart knowledge on robotics and associated fields to a vast majority of NITK student community and motivate them to explore deeper in this field.  The club is a culmination of students from Electronics, Computer Science and Mechanical backgrounds.

In order to achieve its aim, the club conducts various workshops including a introductory workshop and a comprehensive hands-on workshop. The club is actively involved in the Institute’s technical symposium, Engineer, by conducting various tutorial sessions for the students to tackle problem statements at the symposium.  Robotics Club is also known for the projects it undertakes and its participation in diverse robotics competitions across various Techfest like Shaastra-IITM and Techfest-IITB.

Apart from these, Robotics Club is tasked with designing robots to combat problems for diverse sectors and is in the process of designing a Coconut Harvester Robot (COCOBoT), an autonomous robot to harvest coconut trees, where the industry has seen a huge decline in workforce. The project is taken up in joint with CPCRI, the central coconut plantation research institute. The first phase which involves the tree climbing part has already been realized.
